John Elway will always be considered the best Bronco ever to play, and I agree, but Rod Smith is number two.  His work ethic, team first attitude, and feisty leadership did as much as anything to bring two Super Bowls to Denver.  We all knew that he wasn’t coming back after the hip surgergy, but we were all hoping he could.  His retirement today is sad, but I assure you he will be one of the Broncos best coaches this year.

He could even be head coach someday….

I’ve been a soccer coach for awhile, but I needed a place to vent, discuss, and look for soccer ideas.  If you have anything you want to contribute get on over there.  Please let any soccer folks you might know about this site.  I can use all the help I can get.

I went to see Kung Fu Panda last night, and well…It Rocks!!!!

This is by far the best animated film I’ve seen in a long time. I highly recommend it.

The school I coach at seems to have gotten it right…

D.S.S.T.’s first senior class has had every member be accepted to a four year college.  A remarkable feat!  Additionally, the school has a diverse makeup…

the senior class is 60 percent minority, 50 percent will be the first in their families to go to college and 40 percent are low-income.

Why the success?  Well the school is hard, but caring.  They don’t teach to a “test” but teach for life.  The CSAPS take care of themselves.  The school makes the kids understand that excuses are just that.  They learn quickly that success and failure is a personal choice.

I won’t lie.  I hurts my team to have kids missing practice because of tutoring, or internship programs, or mock trial preparation, or some other activity.  But I’d rather have a bad team with a bunch of future lawyers and doctors than a great team with kids only interested in “getting to the pros.”  For me, the best type of player is a smart player.  Smarts trump talent in most cases.

This is not to say my teams are bad, we’re not.  And that’s the great thing.  We get our wins and I have the privilege of working with our future’s best and brightest.

Not too bad a situation if you ask me.

SAN DIEGO — The Rockies played all night and into the next morning.
But it was worth it.

Not only did the Rockies pull out a record-setting 2-1, 22-inning victory against the Padres as Thursday night turned into Friday morning at Petco Park, but they also rediscovered the ace for their rotation.

The game ended at 2:21 a.m. Denver time. There were 15 pitchers and 683 pitches.

I tried to stay up and watch but I fell asleep in the 20th inning. I’m dragging today but I’m sure I’m not nearly as tired as the players. Good luck playing tonight fellas!

….on my way to Estes Park.

I was driving my girl’s soccer team to a game against Estes Park High School in Estes Park when the bus…died. I tried to get it going again but it just wasn’t happening. So there we were stuck on the highway in the mountains. After several minutes, a Boulder County Sheriff pulled up and helped. As we were waiting for the bus to cool down he told me what an interesting day he’d had.

Turns out he was one of the cops involved in this…

A man stole an ambulance from outside the Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette on Tuesday afternoon.

Read the article, it’s pretty funny, but to hear the story from the deputy was hilarious. The part where the guy took off with the lights and sirens on was especially humorous.

Needless to say, that was the highlight of my afternoon yesterday.

There’s just so much wrong with this…

When Mom wears one set of gang colors and Dad wears another, conflict over how to raise the baby can cause irreconcilable differences.

Gee I guess it could, what with all the shooting at each other and stuff.  But how did the cops find out about the Jets/Sharks relationship anyway?

When officers questioned the woman, they learned that the two had been together for four years and were the parents of a child.

When police asked the woman why the two had separated, she said they have “different ideas about how the baby should be raised,” according to a police report.

When officer Daniel Swift asked the woman what she meant by that, she said that the two belong to different street gangs.

“They could not agree on which gang the baby would claim,” Swift said.

Nice.

I’m trying to decide the worst part of this story.  The fact that these two were from different gangs but living together and having kids?  That they fought over which gang the baby should be in?  Or maybe that the mother actually told the cops the real reason for the fight.

I tell ya, stories like this make me really happy never joined a gang….so many tough choices to make.

You never know who’s life you might save….

A lot had to happen to keep Standley Lake High student Lindsay Hayden alive on Monday, and everything worked to perfection.

Lindsey, a 17-year-old senior, collapsed during class, slumping from her chair.

Classmate Cameron Durand knew CPR, and he didn’t hesitate; Lindsey wasn’t breathing.

I had to take CPR in order to coach my soccer team and it does take about five hours, but those five hours are nothing compared to being able to save someone’s life.

This is hysterical….

The way things are going, Boulder will only make it about halfway to its goal of cutting enough greenhouse gases to comply with the Kyoto Protocol, according to a memo released by the city staff Wednesday. 

I think this says a lot more about the Kyoto Protocol then Boulder, but still, not even halfway to being compliant? I guess this should stop them preaching to the rest of us.  But there’s a reason that cuts even more to the heart of this issue.

So far, the city’s approach to emission reduction has relied heavily on marketing and subsidies — most of which are offered in conjunction with Xcel Energy or Boulder County — to convince people to take voluntary actions, including retrofitting their homes, driving less and buying wind-power offsets. The Office of Environmental Affairs would also dump the majority of new money into reducing greenhouse gases through energy efficiency.

So all the money the city is getting to become compliant is on marketing and offsets?  So they’re not doing anything, anything that is except patting themselves on the back for looking like they’re doing something.  How typical.  Of course the only way for Boulder to get to their goals is to drastically raise taxes and force people to live a certain way.  They even want to limit house sizes.    Of course when Boulderites are forced to actually enact all these “rules” they say they live by, watch how quickly they backtrack.  Boulder is the ultimate “feel good” community, they will support anything until it stops them from “feeling good” about their individual lives then it just goes away.
