Please keep ripping the Rockies

I love the Rockies, but they have really sucked the last few years.  I know it, fans know it, even the Rockies know it.  Lately, however, the sports reporters in this town have really been giving it to the team, and the owners.  For the last couple weeks, AM 950 the Fan morning show has been ripping the Rockies, sending out a producer to “find” the owners to come on the show.

I guess the Rockies were listening.

Why?  Try these numbers.  The Rockies have 14 wins, 6 losses in their last 20 games.  They’ve won or tied their last 6 series (only blemish is a 2-2  home series against St Louis) including their last three road series.

The Rockies are still lagging, but they’re not in last place in the NL West anymore.  A real achievement over the last few years.

So, they’re in Boston right now.  They lost the first game 2-1 against knuckleballer Tim Wakefield.  I watched the replay only to see a ball start at a guy’s head and end up bouncing off the plate.  The knuckleball is an ugly pitch, and Wakefield is as good as anyone in history throwing the pitch.

Thank goodness the sports writers were there to help…..

The Rockies have been playing well of late, but they continue to R.I.P. with R.I.S.P.

Translation for the non-seamheads in the crowd: They’re struggling at the plate with runners in scoring position.

So what happens last night in the second game against the Sawx?  The Rox pound out 12 runs on 14 hits including a 3 run blast by Brad Hawpe off Boston starter Curt Schilling and a bases clearing double by Todd Helton.   They go into tonight’s game with a shot at winning their fourth straight road series.

Thank you Jim Armstrong!

Armstrong, by the way, is one of the best writers in the country, and a guy who I’ve known and worked with for years when I worked with Irv and Joe.

So to my colleagues (yes, colleagues.  I’m due to cover the Broncos yet again this year) in the sports press.  Keep blasting the Rockies, they need it.

Heck, if they keep enough heat on, the Rockies might make it to the World Series.

A guy can dream, right?

This should be interesting

And fun…

What is the Denver City Council thinking, to be even considering passing a proclamation essentially drafted by a loose-knit group of radicals who are planning mass protests around the Democratic National Convention?

The Re-create 68 Alliance brags on its Web site, “We will demand change by making the Democratic Convention of 1968 look like a small get together in 2008!”

I don’t think this group has been around Denver very long, because the police have a long tradition of not treating people very nicely.

Seriously though, Chicago 1968 wasn’t a great time for Democrats, and it really, really wasn’t a great time for those protesters.  Most folks saw those protest and were disgusted.  Why anyone would want to make that mess look like “a small get together” is beyond me. Then again thinking really hasn’t been a strong point for these folks.

But hey, I’m not a Democrat, so knock yourselves out.  It’s not like you have anything to lose, like the presidency, or the majority in Congress, or anything.

We have to let them do it

No matter how angry this gets us…

A member of the bizarre Kansas church that protests U.S. soldiers’ funerals has been arrested in Nebraska because her young son stomped on an American flag.

Don’t get me wrong. I hate the folks who do this as much as the next person, particularly these crazies who think it’s o.k. to protest funerals of any type, but they still should be allowed to trash an American flag.

Why?

Well, no one can make a law that abridges free speech, we all know that.  Folks can only make laws to ban actions.  So if we decided to ban burning the flag, we would have to arrest everyone who burned a flag, regardless of why.   That would be a real blow for all those Veterans who ritually burn old flags at VFW locations all across the country.  We would have to arrest every one of them.  I know that sounds harsh, but the law is the law.

Now, I’m not really in favor of arresting these Veterans, so the only solution is to grit our teeth, and let people burn, or stomp, or do whatever to the flag.  I know it’s not easy, but we don’t have the right to live our whole lives without being offended.

Freedom isn’t free, and it isn’t always fun, but it’s a whole lot better than the alternatives.

“Come on Down!” Bob Barker’s retiring

Today is Bob Barker‘s last day…

For the fans who traveled across the country and slept on the sidewalk outside CBS Television City, this was their day – the day of Bob Barker’s last “Price is Right.”

The silver-haired icon, who has hosted the game show for 35 years, plans to officially begin his retirement Thursday.

Philip Barrett, 24, of Tampa, Fla. had camped outside the studios since Saturday to see Barker tape his last show on Wednesday afternoon.

I grew up watching “The Price is Right“, especially on summer days when I had nothing better to do.   I really loved it when his announcer, the late Rod Roddy yelled “A Brand New Car!!!”  My only wish was to win one of those Pintos, or K-Cars.   My favorite games were Cliff Hanger and, of course, Plinko.  And who didn’t want to make it to the Showcase Showdown so they could spin the money wheel.

I will admit that as I got older, I lost interest in “The Price is Right”.  That is until I heard about sly old Bob and his model, and his excellent cameo in “Happy Gilmore“.

So today I congratulate Bob Barker on his retirement, and as he always used to say “remember to spay and neuter your pets”.  Thanks for the memories.

Mental health might be an issue

with this guy…

A man is accused of breaking into a home, drinking beer, then getting a clean shirt out of the dryer.

I mean, I know beer is expensive, especially after that beer disaster a few weeks back, but it ain’t that expensive.  And a clean shirt?  I’m sure The Arc has some great deals.

Yeah, I’m thinking this guy needs some mental health help.
